Self-Awareness Counseling Offers Distance Counseling, Coaching & Consulting
Distance Counseling
Distance Counseling (also called TeleMental Health) is available either by phone or by video chat. I am a Board Certified TeleMental Health Provider. I use VSee for video chat which is a video chat service (like Skype) that is encrypted for confidentiality. Some clients prefer phone sessions and either is fine unless you need video sessions for insurance reimbursement purposes.
The ability to conduct distance counseling sessions is a great advantage for many of my clients for a variety of reasons. For some clients it means that they are able to get the kind of specialized counseling they need, even though they live far from my office. For others it overcomes prohibitive health or transportation issues. It is also very convenient for the continuity of the counseling work when clients can’t make it to the office because of bad weather, transportation or childcare issues, busy schedules or when they are not feeling well enough to travel. It can also be helpful in dealing with the transition of a move away from the area.
American State Counseling Laws Vary Regarding Distance Counseling (TeleMental Health)
Please note:
This is NOT an issue for Coaching, Consulting, or for Counseling outside of the United States. This is ONLY an issue for Counseling within the United States.
As the technology improves, Telemental Health availability is growing. But because it is so new, American state counseling licensure laws vary quite a bit in regard to its legality. In many states the laws are still unclear. Some US state laws specifically prohibit distance counseling, so there may be limitations to the work I can legally do with you based on the state you live in. I am happy to look into your state laws if you live outside of Oregon and are considering counseling work with me. This is not an issue if the HSP work that you would like to do falls into the category of either Coaching, or Consulting, or if you would like to do counseling and live outside of the United States.
Some States Require Insurance Companies to Reimburse Equally for Video Sessions and In-Person Sessions.
There is now research showing that video counseling outcomes are comparable to in-person counseling and because of that, some states have laws requiring insurance companies to reimburse equally for video and in-office counseling. Oregon is one of those states. If you live outside of Oregon, check with your state insurance board to see if your state legally requires your insurance company to reimburse you in the same amount that it would for an in-office visit.
